One thing that is certain in life is that we all experience pain at some point – it just can’t be avoided as much as we might try to avoid, numb it through substance use, or simply deny. Sometimes we have buried our pain so deep inside that along with it we have buried a part of ourselves. Sigmund Freud once said that we are as troubled as our deepest secrets, and if we shine light on our deep secrets, our troubles lift and we connect to all parts of our self. The deepening connection with our self allows us to become whole. Because conflict and negative experiences are inevitable in life, we cannot avoid pain, but we can recover from it. And no one has to go through it alone.
